Frankincense Powder (Flogging Wound Formula)

Yuhyang-san

한글 유향산 (장상)  ·  Pinyin Ru Xiang San

乳香散

The Injuries chapter carries two formulas called 乳香散 and the Donguibogam a third. This is the one in the 杖傷 section, built on calcined pyrite with Korean angelica, fennel, frankincense and myrrh; the other in this chapter stands in the 攧撲墮落壓倒傷 section and is a different prescription — stir-fried white atractylodes, stir-fried Korean angelica, angelica dahurica, cinnamon bark, frankincense, myrrh and licorice in equal parts, registered as `yuhyang-san-jeonbak`. Since the two cannot be parted by a chapter tail, each takes its section name, following the 托裏黃芪湯 precedent. The third, `yuhyang-san-gu`, is the mouth-sore powder of the 口舌門 — frankincense, myrrh, alum and verdigris dusted on a red sore — and has nothing to do with trauma. 溫 is printed for the transcription's 温; 煆 is left as both the transcription and the corpus print it. 《精要》 is romanised Jeongyo, following the corpus.

Translation

Treats a flogging wound swollen and painful. Pyrite (calcined in the fire and quenched in vinegar seven times) and Korean angelica, 5 don each; fennel 4 don; frankincense and myrrh, 3 don each. Powder the above and send 3 don down at a time stirred into warm wine. — Jeongyo 精要 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The 杖傷 section's main internal powder, and the formula the section's own prose names first when it lists what to take for a flogging wound. Calcined pyrite and Korean angelica lead at 5 don, fennel follows at 4, and frankincense and myrrh close it at 3 — so the heaviest drugs are the Blood drugs and the resins are the finish rather than the body of it. Three don in warm wine, which is itself part of the treatment as the chapter understands it. For the patient actually in front of the physician — a man with a bruised, swollen, partly broken back after a judicial beating — this is palliation, and reasonable palliation by the standards of its time. Pyrite does nothing; fennel and the resins are mildly analgesic at best, and most of the relief would have come from the wine. What such an injury needs is cleaning, dressing, analgesia and tetanus prophylaxis, and in a severe flogging the real dangers are blood loss, crush injury to muscle with kidney failure from myoglobin, and wound infection — none of which a powder in wine addresses. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
