Frankincense Powder (Contusion Formula)

Yuhyang-san

한글 유향산 (전박상)  ·  Pinyin Ru Xiang San

乳香散

Three formulas named 乳香散 stand in the corpus and they are not the same prescription. This is the one in 1.4 攧撲墮落壓倒傷, from 得效, seven drugs in equal parts for the pain of a contusion. A second 乳香散 stands in 1.10 杖傷 of this same chapter, built on 自然銅 for flogging wounds, registered as yuhyang-san-jangsang. A third, unrelated to either, is the 綱目 powder of frankincense, myrrh, alum and verdigris dusted on red mouth sores in 口舌門, registered as yuhyang-san-gu. The chapter tail distinguishes the two Bogam trauma formulas from each other and from the mouth-sore powder, which keeps the bare-stem id it was registered with.

Powder them; 2 don each time, stirred into warm wine and taken down. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seven drugs in equal parts, powdered, 2 don in warm wine. The pair that names it — frankincense and myrrh — sits on a warming, blood-moving base: 當歸 and 白朮 both dry-fried, 白芷, 桂皮, 甘草. The indication is narrow and the text does not pretend otherwise: 打撲傷損, 痛不可忍, a blunt injury where the pain has stopped being bearable. This is an analgesic, not a treatment for the injury under it. The two resins are weak anti-inflammatories; the warm wine is the most reliably active thing in the cup, and it is the wine that will take the edge off. For a bruise or a wrenched muscle that is a fair trade. For a fracture, a joint that will not bear weight, or any blow to the head, pain past bearing is a reason to get the part imaged, not a reason to reach for a powder. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
