Translation

Treats all injuries, stops pain, and clears the Heart, moves qi and quickens the blood as if by magic. Wild aconite (used raw), frankincense (heat-ironed), myrrh (heat-ironed) and flying squirrel faeces, 3 don each; a little raw musk. Powder them and make pills with wine paste the size of a fingertip, coated with cinnabar. One pill each time, ground down in mint decoction and ginger juice and taken. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A pill rather than a powder, and the only one in this run that gives aconite raw: 草烏生用 at 3 don, with frankincense and myrrh heat-ironed to drive off their volatile fraction, 五靈脂, and a little raw musk. Bound with wine paste into fingertip-sized pills, coated with cinnabar, and each pill ground down in mint decoction and ginger juice before swallowing. The claim 如神 is attached to the analgesia, not to any repair. What the pill is actually for is pain after a blow, and the mechanism it is reaching for is the same one as 雙烏散 and 草烏散 — numbing. Giving 草烏 unprocessed is the hazardous choice; the 炮 step that 雙烏散 insists on is the one hydrolysis that lowers the diester alkaloid load, and it is omitted here. **Contains aconite, used raw, which is toxic. This must not be prepared.** **The cinnabar coating is mercuric sulfide and must not be ingested.** It also contains musk, from a CITES-protected animal. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
