Transform Static Blood Powder

Hwaeo-san

한글 화어산  ·  Pinyin Hua Yu San

化瘀散

蘇木, 大黃, 溫 and 《醫鑑》 are printed with the standard glyphs for the transcription's 蘓木, 大黄, 温 and 醫鍳. The collation note 坐 : 生 standing at the foot of this leaf does not belong to it: the character it annotates is in the 杖傷 section's own prose above, where the list of flogging-wound formulas writes 補氣坐血湯 for 補氣生血湯, and the First Edition reads 生 there.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs, all of them Blood drugs, for the worst hour after a severe beating: sappanwood and the tail of the Korean angelica root at 3 don, rhubarb and safflower at 2, taken in warm wine with a child's urine. The reasoning is the chapter's standing one — the Blood struck out of the vessels has risen and is pressing on the Heart, hence the agitation and the oppression in the chest, and it must be broken up and led out downward. That reading has to be named for what it is. A man agitated, oppressed and near collapse after a heavy flogging is in shock from blood loss, or has a chest or abdominal injury, or has crush damage to large muscles. Rhubarb purges, which takes fluid out of a circulation that is already short; wine opens the vessels further; and a child's urine does nothing but carry an infection risk. This is one of several places where the chapter's instinct to drive the Blood out below would harm the patient it describes. Such a patient needs fluid, pressure control, imaging and surgical assessment. **Contains rhubarb (大黃), a purgative given to a patient who may be bleeding internally, and a child's urine (童便), a human material. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
