Translation

Treats wind striking the blood and vessels, with no six-channel signs without and no blockage of stool and urine within, but the limbs unable to be lifted and the mouth unable to speak, or phlegm clouding the senses. Tangkuei, chuanxiong, white peony, raw rehmannia, ophiopogon, polygala, acorus, tangerine peel, lindera, white poria, bitter orange immature fruit, coptis, saposhnikovia, notopterygium, large-leaf gentian, pinellia, arisaema and licorice, 6 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and one lump of bamboo shavings, and decoct in water. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The third term of the chapter's three-way scheme, and the one with the best clinical logic. No exterior signs and no interior blockage means the wind has struck neither the bowels nor the viscera but the blood and vessels — which is to say the deficit is neurological and nothing else is wrong — and the answer is to nourish the blood, open the orifices with polygala and acorus, and clear phlegm. Eighteen drugs at six fun each is a broad prescription, but the reasoning that produced it is the reasoning a modern clinician uses to decide that a stroke patient needs rehabilitation rather than resuscitation. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
