Translation

Treats wind stroke with no six-channel signs without and no blockage of stool and urine within: one knows it to be the blood weak and unable to nourish the sinews, and therefore the hands and feet cannot move and the tongue is stiff and cannot speak. The blood should be nourished and the sinews flourish of themselves; this formula governs it. Large-leaf gentian and gypsum, 1 don each; notopterygium, pubescent angelica, chuanxiong, angelica dahurica, raw rehmannia, cooked rehmannia, tangkuei, white peony, scutellaria, white poria, saposhnikovia, white atractylodes and licorice, 7 fun each; asarum, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water, at any hour. — Yeokro 易老 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Yeokro's formula and the clearest statement in the chapter of the diagnosis by exclusion that the three-way scheme makes possible: nothing at the exterior, nothing blocked within, therefore the blood is too weak to feed the sinews. Nourish the blood and the sinews flourish of themselves — which licenses the Four Substances quartet as the core of a wind formula, with the wind drugs reduced to escorts. It is still prescribed under this name for post-stroke hemiplegia, and of the chapter's major formulas it is the one whose logic translates most readily. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
