Translation

Treats wind striking the five viscera, with the spirit distracted and vague, the hands and feet insensible, and the mouth and eye deviated. Pubescent angelica, ephedra and red poria, 1 don each; white atractylodes, cassia bark, chuanxiong, apricot kernel, white peony, saposhnikovia, tangkuei and licorice, 8 fun each; dictamnus bark, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Gukbang's formula for the gravest of the three strokes, wind in the viscera, and its composition is Soseungmyeong-tang's minus the aconite and plus dictamnus bark. The substitution is telling: aconite for a patient already unconscious was evidently thought too much, and dictamnus — a wind-damp drug used mostly for the skin — is the mildest possible replacement. The next entry is the Uigam's reworking of this same formula. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
