Translation

Treats wind striking the bowels or the viscera: first treat with the primary medicine, and afterwards use this to regulate. Whenever in wind stroke the inner evil is already removed and the outer evil already exhausted, this medicine should be taken to move and guide the several channels; given long, the great wind is wholly gone, clear and turbid separate of themselves, and construction and defence are harmonious of themselves. Atractylodes, gypsum and raw rehmannia, 6 fun each; notopterygium, saposhnikovia, tangkuei, vitex, chuanxiong, asarum, astragalus, bitter orange, ginseng, ephedra, angelica dahurica, chrysanthemum, mint, lycium fruit, bupleurum, anemarrhena, lycium bark, pubescent angelica, eucommia, large-leaf gentian, scutellaria, white peony and licorice, 4 fun each; cassia bark, 2 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, decoct in water and take morning and evening. Or with this decoction swallow Isam-dan on an empty stomach and Sabaek-dan on lying down. Also called Yupung-tang. It treats liver and kidney vacuity with weak sinews and bones, difficult speech and a clouded spirit; or the thin with hemiplegia, or the stout who cannot move; or fearfulness with forgetfulness, or joy with much brooding — for the way of brooding and forgetting is in every case essence insufficient. It can settle the heart and nourish the spirit, regulating yin and yang so that neither prevails. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 · Dansim 丹心 · Yeokro 易老 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-seven drugs, and the chapter's convalescent formula rather than its acute one — the indication says so twice: give it after the primary medicine, when the inner and outer evils are both gone. What makes it worth reading is the clinical portrait Yeokro attaches: weak sinews, difficult speech, a clouded mind; the thin with a paralysed side and the stout who cannot move; fearfulness with forgetfulness, joy with brooding. That is the sequel of a stroke described as a whole condition rather than a lesion, and the prescription answers it as one — tonics for the liver and kidney, wind drugs to keep the channels open, and the two pills timed to morning and night. Giving a decoction as the vehicle for pills is the chapter's most elaborate dosing scheme. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
