Cool the Blood Drink

Yanghyeol-eum

한글 양혈음  ·  Pinyin Liang Xue Yin

凉血飮

The Bogam carries three formulas called 凉血飮. This is the 諸瘡門 one, from the Deukhyo, an eight-drug decoction at 1 don each for 血熱生瘡; the 痔門 formula for 痔漏 is registered as yanghyeol-eum and the 癰疽門 formula for 心癰 as yanghyeol-eum-ongjeo. The three share red peony, trichosanthes root, ophiopogon and raw rehmannia but are otherwise different prescriptions, so this one takes the chapter tail. The leaf opens at the page break; the marker [055b] stands above the first character and is not part of the text. 生芐 is printed as the transcription has it — 芐 is the old graph for 地黃 — and is entered under 生地黃, as the corpus does at dossi-dojeokgakban-tang.

Translation

Treats sores engendered by heat in the blood. Red peony, scutellaria, cnidium, schizonepeta, raw rehmannia, ophiopogon, trichosanthes root and liquorice, 1 don of each. Cut the above up, make one packet, add ten stems of rush pith and ten bamboo leaves, decoct and take. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A short, plain cooling decoction. Red peony and scutellaria are the cooling pair, raw rehmannia cools the blood itself, ophiopogon and trichosanthes root replace the fluid that the heat has taken, schizonepeta and cnidium keep the surface moving so that the eruption is not merely suppressed, and liquorice harmonises. Rush pith and bamboo leaf at the end of the packet are the Deukhyo's standard way of sending heat downward into the urine. 血熱生瘡 is the chapter's name for an eruption that is red and hot rather than weeping and cold — a working category rather than a diagnosis. In practice it covers acute inflammatory dermatitis of many kinds. The composition is unobjectionable; none of the eight drugs is hazardous at these weights. What it cannot do is reach an infected sore, and the section it sits in is explicit that these are sores running pus and blood. A hot, spreading, tender eruption is treated on the evidence of what is growing in it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
