Realgar and Musk Powder for Visitor Vexation

Ungsa-san

한글 웅사산 (소아)  ·  Pinyin Xiong She San

雄麝散

A different Realgar and Musk Powder is registered from the Resolving Toxins chapter as ungsa-san — realgar and musk in equal parts, wrapped in raw sheep's lung and swallowed, for the five kinds of worm toxin. The two share only the two drugs of the name; this chapter's adds frankincense, gives weights, and is poured in with cock's-comb blood, so it takes the chapter tail. The mother's garment is apparatus and is left out of the ingredient list.

Clinical commentary 臨床

客忤, visitor vexation, is the chapter's name for an infant who was well and is suddenly not — after a stranger came near, after being carried past a shrine, after an outing. The section preceding this leaf describes vomiting of coloured froth, watery stools, abdominal pain, arching and twitching, and says it looks like fright epilepsy but the eyes do not roll up. That is a description of an acutely ill baby of any cause: sepsis, meningitis, intussusception, a metabolic crisis. None of them is treated by this powder, and all of them are emergencies. The cock's-comb blood and the mother's garment are the magical half of the prescription; the drugs are the other half, and they are worse. **Contains realgar, an arsenic sulfide. Arsenic is a cumulative poison with no safe dose, and an infant's kidneys clear it poorly. It also contains musk, from a CITES Appendix I deer, which has no useful pharmacological action; the demand this tradition created is why the musk deer are endangered. Fresh blood from a live bird poured into a newborn's mouth is a route for Salmonella and Campylobacter infection. The patient is an infant and the text gives no dose by weight anywhere. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
