Warding Off Evil Paste

Byeoksa-go

한글 벽사고  ·  Pinyin Bi Xie Gao

辟邪膏

The transcription writes 降真香 with 真, and the collation note pairing 真 against the First Edition's 眞 stands at the 009b/010a page break two leaves further on, inside the Night Crying section introduction; the character it annotates is this leaf's, and the pair is a pure glyph variant, so the standard 眞 is printed. 沈香 is printed for the transcription's 沉香, following the corpus majority. 卧 is left as both the transcription and the corpus print it. The source label 錢氏 is not among the corpus's settled labels and is romanised here as Jeonssi.

Translation

Treats a small child struck by malignity. Rosewood resin, sweetgum resin, agarwood, tiger skull bone, ginseng, winged euonymus twig and gentian, 5 don each. Powder them, add realgar 5 don and musk 1 don, and blend evenly with refined honey into a paste. Take a little, dissolve it in a frankincense decoction and let it down into the child's mouth; and it is better still to have the child carry it and to burn it inside the sleeping room. — Jeonssi 錢氏 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seven aromatics and bones at 5 don each, then realgar and musk worked into honey. It is one of the Bogam's three tiger-skull amulet formulas — Chilmul Hodu-won and Hoechun Byeoksa-dan are the others — and like them it is used three ways at once: swallowed, worn on the body, and burnt as a fumigant in the room where the child sleeps. The paste is a charm as much as a drug, and the chapter does not pretend otherwise. 中惡, struck by malignity, is described in the section above as sudden stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, stifling confusion, a wish to die, and a blue-black philtrum. In a baby that is shock, and it has a cause that wants finding. **Contains realgar, an arsenic sulfide, at 5 don — arsenic is a cumulative poison with no safe dose, and an infant's kidneys clear it poorly. It contains musk and tiger bone, both from protected animals; tiger bone is prohibited under CITES and in national law almost everywhere, and the trade in it has driven the species to the edge. Burning the paste in a closed room exposes the infant to arsenic in the smoke as well. The patient is an infant and the text gives no dose by weight anywhere. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
