Translation

Wards off pestilence, kills demons and removes every kind of epidemic qi. Tiger head bone, cinnabar and realgar 1 nyang 5 don each; dysosma rhizome, gleditsia pod, elm fruit paste and orpiment 1 nyang each. Powder the above, bind with melted beeswax into pills the size of a bullet, put one pill in a red silk bag and tie it to the arm — the left for a man, the right for a woman — and hang others at the four corners of the house. If an epidemic breaks out in the country nearby, then at midnight on the last and the fifteenth day of the month each household burns one pill facing the door, and on rising in the morning each person swallows one pill the size of an adzuki bean; then the infection will not be taken. — Bogam 寶鑑 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seven drugs and four separate ways of using them. Tiger head bone, cinnabar and realgar at a nyang and a half each, with dysosma, gleditsia pod, elm fruit paste and orpiment behind them, melted into beeswax and rolled into bullet-sized pills. One pill goes in a red bag on the arm, left for a man and right for a woman; more hang at the four corners of the house; when an outbreak reaches the next district each household burns one at the door at midnight on the dark and the full of the moon. The last instruction is the one that matters, and it is the one that separates this leaf from the amulets around it: on rising, each person swallows an adzuki-sized pill. That makes a household prophylactic out of two arsenic sulfides and a mercury sulfide taken daily for as long as the epidemic lasts. The chapter elsewhere keeps its minerals outside the body — worn, hung, burnt, or painted in the nostril — and the honest reading of this one is that it did not. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide, realgar and orpiment, which are arsenic sulfides, dysosma, which is toxic, and tiger bone, which is prohibited under CITES. The daily swallowed pill is a cumulative arsenic and mercury dose and this must not be prepared or taken under any circumstances.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
