Museongja's Firefly Pill

Museongjahyeonghwa-hwan

한글 무성자형화환  ·  Pinyin Wu Cheng Zi Ying Huo Wan

務成子螢火丸

Four of the drugs have no entry in the herb list and are not in the ingredients above: 螢火 (firefly), 鬼箭羽 (the winged twig of Euonymus alatus), 鍛竈灰 (ash from a smith's furnace) and 鐵槌柄 (the wood of an iron hammer's handle, the part sunk into the head). 雄雞冠血, the blood of a cock's comb, is likewise unlisted and is named in the egg-yolk prep instead. 蒺藜子 is registered under the headword 白蒺藜 and 礬石 under 白礬. The transcription prints 盗 and 㐫, given above in the standard forms 盜 and 凶; 幷 and 雞 are left as transcribed.

Translation

Wards off pestilent and malign qi, the hundred demons, tigers and wolves, snakes and vipers, the several poisons of wasps and scorpions, the five weapons and bare blades, and the violent harm of robbers. Realgar and orpiment 2 nyang each; firefly, winged euonymus twig, tribulus seed and alum (burnt) 1 nyang each; saiga antelope horn, ash from a smith's furnace, and the handle of an iron hammer (taking the part that enters the iron) 2 don 5 fun each. Powder the above and mix with one whole egg yolk together with the blood of a cock's comb, into pieces the size of an apricot kernel; sew a three-cornered crimson bag, put five pills in it, and wear it on the left arm. It may also be hung above the door. ○ Long ago the Champion General Liu Zinan received this prescription. Later, defeated in battle with the barbarians on the northern frontier and surrounded, the arrows came down like rain, yet before they came within a few feet of Zinan's horse they all fell to the ground. The barbarians took him for a divine man, lifted the siege and left. Hence it is also called the Champion Pill. — Cheongeum 千金 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two arsenic sulfides at two nyang each, a firefly, the winged twig of euonymus, tribulus seed and burnt alum, with antelope horn, the ash of a blacksmith's hearth and the shaft of an iron hammer in small amounts, bound with raw egg yolk and the blood of a cock's comb and sewn five to a three-cornered crimson bag. Nothing here is swallowed. It is worn on the left arm or hung over the doorway, and the list of what it is said to turn aside runs well past disease — demons, tigers, wolves, snakes, wasps, scorpions, weapons, blades and bandits. The iron and the fire are the sense of it on its own terms. A hammer handle worn into the head of the hammer, the ash out of a forge, a firefly that carries its own light, and the two yellow minerals that smiths and alchemists both worked with: the bag is made of the materials of the forge, which is where a culture that feared edged weapons would look for protection from them. The Liu Zinan story at the foot of the leaf is a soldier's amulet tale and is the reason for the second name, Champion Pill. The Bogam keeps it, and it should be read as the history of the object rather than as evidence of anything. **Contains realgar and orpiment, which are arsenic sulfides, and raw egg yolk and fresh cock's blood, which carry an infection risk. Saiga antelope horn is from a protected species. This must not be prepared, worn or handled — arsenic compounds are absorbed through skin and broken skin.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
