Translation

Treats a small child suddenly taken with visitor vexation. Yellow earth from the heart of the stove and earthworm castings in equal parts. Grind them fine, mix with water, and smear it on the child's head and on the five hearts — the palms, the soles and the breast. Good. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs, and both of them are dirt. 竈心黃土 is the baked earth from the floor of a cooking stove; 蚯蚓糞 is the casting an earthworm leaves on the ground. Mixed with water they make a mud, and the mud is smeared on a sick baby's scalp, palms, soles and chest. There is nothing in it. Whatever the infant has — and the section describes a child who was well that morning — the mud does not touch it, and the hours spent mixing and smearing are hours in which a septic or obstructed newborn is not being taken anywhere. **This is earth and worm faeces applied to an infant. Both carry environmental bacteria and tetanus spores, and on a newborn with any break in the skin — the cord stump above all — earth is a route of infection, not a treatment. It is also smeared on the scalp of a baby whose fontanelle is open. The patient is an infant and the text gives no dose by weight anywhere.
