Water and Land Elixir

Suryuk-dan

한글 수륙단  ·  Pinyin Shui Lu Dan

水陸丹

The Bogam names the two drugs but gives no weights, no proportion and no method; the weights here are nominal and equal. The Kyujanggak edition adds a cross-reference to the Jeongjeon after the name, which a collation note records as absent from the first printing.

Translation

Cherokee rose fruit astringes the essence Qi and stops involuntary emission. Combined with cock's-head fruit it makes Suryuk-dan, which supplements the true Qi and seals in the essence very well. — Boncho 本草 (Donguibogam · Jeong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

水陸, water and land, and the name is the whole explanation: the rose hip from dry ground and the euryale seed from the pond, two sour astringents from opposite habitats. It is the most compact naming in the Essence chapter and the least documented formula in it — the Bogam tells us what is in it and nothing else. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
