Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

五味子膏, 澁精氣, 治夢遺滑脫. 五味子一斤, 洗淨水浸一宿, 挼取汁, 去核, 以布濾過, 入鍋內, 入冬蜜二斤, 慢火熬成膏. 每取一二匙, 空心白湯調服. 《本草》

Translation

The schisandra paste astringes the essence Qi and treats emission in dreams and slipping away. Schisandra 1 geun, washed clean and steeped in water overnight, rubbed to get the juice out, the stones discarded, strained through cloth, put into a pot with 2 geun of winter honey and boiled down over a slow fire to a paste. Take one or two spoonfuls each time, stirred into plain hot water on an empty stomach. — Boncho 本草 (Donguibogam · Jeong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A pound of fruit to two of honey, boiled down and kept in a jar — a confection rather than a medicine, made to be taken by the spoonful every morning. Schisandra is the corpus's chief sour astringent and this is the plainest way it is given; the honey is both the preservative and the reason anyone could take that much of so sour a fruit. 夢遺滑脫 names the two complaints the Essence chapter's second half is written for. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
