Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

牡蠣, 治鬼交泄精, 又治精滑不固. 火煆醋淬七次, 爲末, 醋糊和丸梧子大, 每五十丸, 空心鹽湯下, 名曰固眞丸. 《東垣》

Translation

Oyster shell treats loss of essence from intercourse with a ghost, and treats essence that slips away and will not hold. Calcined in fire and quenched in vinegar seven times, powdered, made into pills the size of paulownia seeds with vinegar paste; take fifty pills a dose down with salt water on an empty stomach. Clinical commentary 臨床

One mineral, seven calcinations, and a name that states the aim. The repeated heating and vinegar quenching cracks the shell and converts its surface to the acetate, so what the patient swallows is absorbable calcium rather than inert carbonate — the same processing the Fluids chapter gives oyster shell for night sweats. 精滑不固, essence that slips and will not hold, is the chapter's most chronic complaint, and the salt-water vehicle is there to send the drug to the kidney. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
