Food-Dispersing Powder (Children chapter)

Sosik-san

한글 소식산 (소아)  ·  Pinyin Xiao Shi San

消食散

The derived id collides with a formula of a different name: 消蝕散, the 直指 corroding powder of the Sores chapter that is laid on proud flesh, is registered as `sosik-san`, and 消食散 romanizes onto it. `hanrom.py` cannot see this, because its collision check keys on the hanja name and the two names are spelled differently. Following 平肌散/平氣散, 千金散/淸音散 and 溫驚丸/溫經丸, the later leaf takes the chapter tail, so this is `sosik-san-soa`. A third near-namesake, 消食丸 `sosik-hwan`, is the 湯氏 pill of this same chapter and is a different prescription again. 陳壁土 is the earth the atractylodes is roasted in; it is entered as a separate row, as the corpus does with 東壁土炒橘皮 in `seokryeon-san`. The leaf prints 醫鍳, normalized to 醫鑑.

Translation

Treats abdominal pain from food accumulation. White atractylodes (dry-fried in old wall earth), 2 don 5 fun; barley sprout, amomum and hawthorn flesh, 1 don each; red tangerine peel, cyperus, medicated leaven and green tangerine peel, 7 fun each; licorice, 5 fun. Powder the above and give 1 don at a time stirred into rice water. Or cut 2 don coarse, add three slices of ginger, and it may also be decocted and drunk. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A food-moving powder of the ordinary kind, and the only thing unusual about it is how much of it is the atractylodes: 2 don 5 fun of 白朮 against 1 don of each of the three breaking drugs and 7 fun of each of the four peels and leavens. Barley sprout, amomum and hawthorn flesh are the digestives; red and green tangerine peel, cyperus and medicated leaven move and warm; licorice closes it. Dry-frying in old wall earth is a way of making the atractylodes less drying and more settling to the stomach, and the earth is sieved off before use. For the child the section has in mind — one whose belly hurts after too much milk or food — this is a mild and reasonable thing to give, and the second method, 2 don decocted with ginger, is essentially a warm aromatic drink. **Nothing in it is toxic, but it is a qi-moving and stomach-stimulating formula, and giving one into a bowel that is obstructed is dangerous: the stimulus has nowhere to go, and in an obstruction or an intussusception it buys time the child does not have.** The dose is 1 don of powder or 2 don decocted, with no reference to the child's size or weight. Green bilious vomiting, blood in the stool, or a rigid tender abdomen means an obstruction has to be excluded before anything is given by mouth. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
