Food-Dispersing Pill

Sosik-hwan

한글 소식환  ·  Pinyin Xiao Shi Wan

消食丸

The 一名 given by the Hoechun is 消乳丸, which reads as soyu-hwan; that identifier is unoccupied in the corpus and no separate entry is made for it, since it is the same prescription under another name. 依上法服之 refers back to 進食丸 immediately above — two or three pills in rice water for a one-year-old.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The mildest formula in the 積癖 run and the only one with nothing poisonous in it. Fried cyperus at double weight leads, with amomum and tangerine peel to move stagnant qi in the stomach, medicated leaven and malt as the two digestive ferments, and sparganium and zedoary as the pair this section reaches for whenever a mass has to be broken up. The leaven does double duty: it is also the paste that binds the pills. For what 積癖 actually is and why a persistent abdominal mass in a child is an imaging question today, see 進食丸 (jinsik-hwan), where the differential for this batch is set out in full. Judged against what the text claims, this one is close to harmless. Malt and leaven contain amylases and the aromatics are carminative, so a distended, uncomfortable, overfed infant might well seem better after it — which is exactly the trap. The formulas of this section were used on real masses, and a formula that appears to help with wind buys time that a child with a tumour or an intussusception does not have. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
