Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風熱鬱滯, 大便閉澁乾燥. 須潤燥ㆍ和血ㆍ踈風, 則自然通矣. 麻子仁二兩半, 桃仁二兩, 皂角(燒存性) 一兩三錢, 大黃ㆍ羌活各一兩, 防風ㆍ當歸各三錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 白湯下五七十丸. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats wind heat pent and stagnant with the stool shut, inhibited and dry. One must moisten the dryness, harmonize the blood and disperse the wind, and then it passes of itself. Hemp seed, 2.5 nyang; peach kernel, 2 nyang; soap-pod bean burnt with its nature preserved, 1 don 3 fun over a nyang; rhubarb and notopterygium, 1 nyang each; saposhnikovia and tangkuei, 3 don each. Powder, make honey pills the size of a paulownia seed, and take fifty to seventy in plain hot water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Wind constipation is the chapter's category for a dry bound stool in a patient with wind signs — in practice, often the constipation of haemorrhoids and anal fissure, which the Bogam treats elsewhere under intestinal wind. Dongwon's three-part instruction is as clear a statement of method as the chapter offers: moisten, harmonize the blood, disperse the wind.
