Translation

Treats stabbing pain pouring through the hundred joints of the four limbs, all of it caused by wind damp, phlegm and dead blood, the painful place being either swollen or red. Tangkuei, chuanxiong, clematis, angelica dahurica, stephania, phellodendron, arisaema, atractylodes lancea, notopterygium and cinnamon twig, 1 don each; safflower, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger and decoct in water. — Uihak Jeonggam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication is the best in the section because it describes what the physician sees: stabbing pain travelling through the joints, and the painful place either swollen or red. Red and swollen is inflammation, and the formula answers it with phellodendron and stephania for the heat and damp, safflower and tangkuei for the stasis, and arisaema for the thickening the tradition called phlegm. Three fun of safflower against ten drugs at a full don is a deliberate proportion — enough to move the blood, not enough to drive it. A defensible prescription for an acute inflamed joint. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
