Translation

Treats wind and damp contending with each other, the joints of the limbs swollen and painful and unable to bend or stretch. Notopterygium and cimicifuga, 1 don 5 fun each; pubescent angelica, 1 don; atractylodes lancea, stephania, clematis, atractylodes, tangkuei, red poria, alisma and licorice, 7 fun each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Eleven drugs and a clear structure: the two notopterygiums and cimicifuga to lift the wind out above, and stephania, alisma, red poria and the two atractylodes to drain the damp out below. Nothing in it is warm and nothing in it supplements, which marks it for the acute swollen joint rather than the chronic one — and that is precisely where it is still used. The absence of aconite in a formula of this section is worth noting on its own. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
