Translation

Treats swollen painful joints. Pain belongs to fire and swelling belongs to damp, with wind cold also received and stirring within the channels and network vessels, and damp heat pouring among the joints. Ephedra and red peony, 1 don each; saposhnikovia, schizonepeta, notopterygium, pubescent angelica, clematis, angelica dahurica, atractylodes lancea, wine-fried scutellaria, bitter orange, platycodon, pueraria and chuanxiong, 5 fun each; tangkuei root-tail, cimicifuga and licorice, 3 fun each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. Also called Mahwang-jakyak-tang. — Uihak Jeonggam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The clearest piece of pathology in the section, set out in eight characters: pain belongs to fire, swelling belongs to damp. From that the formula follows mechanically — ephedra and the wind drugs for the cold at the surface, scutellaria for the fire, atractylodes and clematis for the damp, and red peony and tangkuei root-tail for the blood in a joint that is hot and tight. Separating the two signs and treating each is better reasoning than anything else in the chapter's joint sections, and the formula remains in use for acute inflammatory arthritis. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
