Immortal's Leftover Grain Decoction

仙遺粮湯

The dose gloss 濕者一兩 is set as an interlinear note because the transcription encloses it in the double-angle marks; the weight recorded in the ingredient list is the 七錢 of the dried root. The transcription writes 毁 for 毀; the transcription's form is printed, as the corpus does not normalize that pair.

Translation

Treats the wind toxin of plum-blossom sores, and the case where calomel has been taken in error so that paralysis, aching of the sinews and bones, and wasted flesh and damaged bone have followed. Taking this removes the root of it and there is never any later trouble. Smilax 7 don — 1 nyang if the root is fresh —; saposhnikovia, chaenomeles, akebia, coix seed, dictamnus root bark and honeysuckle, 5 fun each; the soap-bean thorn 4 fun. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take three times a day. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seven don of smilax against five fun of each of the six supporting drugs — a ratio of fourteen to one. This is the most nearly single-drug of the smilax formulas, and the dose note is a piece of real pharmacy: fresh root is mostly water, so 1 nyang of it is allowed where 7 don of the dried will do. What makes this leaf important is the second half of its indication. It is prescribed not for syphilis but for the paralysis, bone pain and wasting that follow when calomel has been given — which is to say, for the damage done by the treatment that fills the rest of this section. The chapter is quite clear-eyed about this: at 2.2 it describes mercury poisoning after quicksilver or calomel taken in error, and here it offers a remedy for it. Smilax will not chelate mercury, and the neurological injury of mercury poisoning is largely permanent, so the promise that there will be no later trouble cannot be kept. **Mercury poisoning is a medical emergency and is treated with chelation under specialist care, not with a decoction. Nothing in this section should be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
