Immortal's Leftover Grain

Seonyuryang

한글 선유량  ·  Pinyin Xian Yi Liang

仙遺粮

A single-drug leaf: 仙遺粮 is 土茯苓, Smilax glabra, and is entered under tobokryeong. The alias 仙遺粮 is not registered in herb-aliases.yaml against that id and should be added, since the name heads this leaf and three formula names in the same section. The leaf gives no weight for the drug itself, only the dose in pills, so no grams are recorded. The transcription writes 癕 for 癰; the standard form is printed.

Donguibogam

Translation

It is good for long-standing heavenly blister sores, plum-blossom sores, abscess and fistula, and for one who has formerly taken calomel in error so that the limbs are ruined and the sinews and bones ache. It can gather up the toxin, drive out the wind and supplement the depletion. ○ Powder this one drug, roll it with honey into pills the size of a seed of the parasol tree, and swallow fifty pills in a decoction of Sichuan pepper. It works in every case of collapsed nose, fallen eyebrows, slackened sinews and clenched bones. But where the case is new, with lung heat and constipation, it is not to be taken. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The single drug on which the whole section rests, given its own leaf at the end: smilax root, powdered, honey-rolled, fifty pills at a time swallowed in Sichuan pepper decoction. The name means the grain the immortals left behind, and it was a famine food before it was a medicine. The indication is the clearest statement in the chapter of what late syphilis looked like: collapsed nose, fallen eyebrows, slackened sinews, clenched bones — and alongside them the ruined limbs of a patient already poisoned with calomel. The contraindication is equally precise and worth noticing: not in a new case with lung heat and constipation, because the drug is read as gathering and holding the toxin rather than expelling it, and an acute eruption still needs to be let out. Smilax glabra is the one drug here with a genuine historical reputation across Europe and Asia as a syphilis remedy, under the name sarsaparilla. It is comparatively safe and it does not cure syphilis. **Where this section's formulas were taken for mercury poisoning, nothing in them chelates mercury; that is an emergency for specialist care.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
