The transcription writes 醫鍳 for 醫鑑; the standard form is printed. The date flesh and rice flour are the binding paste rather than therapeutic drugs, but they are named in the leaf and are listed; 牙皂 is entered under 皂角, where the corpus already keeps 猪牙皂角.

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is the leaf where the contradiction at the centre of the section is on open display. It is prescribed, among other things, for 輕粉毒 — calomel toxin — and the second drug on its own list is 4 don 2 fun of calomel, with 4 don of cinnabar beside it and 3 don of realgar after that. The logic is the homeopathy of the period: the toxin that lodged in the sinews and bones is to be drawn out by the same substance, driven by pagoda-tree flower, the aromatic blood-movers and a little ox gallstone, and carried on a smilax-and-soap-bean decoction three times a day. In practice this would have poisoned the patient further. Sixteen grams of calomel divided into millet-sized pills and taken three times daily over any length of time is a cumulative mercury dose, and the symptoms it treats — swelling and pain of the limbs, wasting, weakness — are the symptoms it causes. The chapter says as much at 2.2. **Contains mercury. This must not be prepared or taken.** Calomel and the other mercury salts in this section are absorbed through the gut and through broken skin, and they accumulate: salivation, loosened teeth, a metallic taste, tremor, kidney injury and the nerve damage the chapter itself calls weakness and paralysis of the limbs. The chapter records this at 2.2 as a complication of its own treatment — mercury poisoning after taking quicksilver or calomel in error, with wind-heaps, swelling, ulceration and running pus. Several of the formulas in this section are offered as the cure for the poisoning the others cause. **It also contains realgar (雄黃), an arsenic sulfide, and cinnabar (朱砂), a mercuric sulfide.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
