Enliven the Soul Elixir

Hwalhon-dan

한글 활혼단  ·  Pinyin Huo Hun Dan

活魂丹

The transcription reads 白礬枯黃丹, with 枯 following 白礬 rather than preceding it; it is read as 白礬(枯), calcined alum, which is how the same drug is written 枯白礬 two leaves later at 027a, and 黃丹 is taken as a drug of its own. The transcription writes 䓗 for 葱 and 褁 for 裹; 䓗 is corrected and 褁 is kept, as the corpus does not normalize that pair.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ten drugs, almost all of them mineral or animal, in a mung-bean pill chewed inside a scallion leaf and chased with hot wine. The resins — dragon's blood, frankincense, myrrh — and the pangolin scale are the frame; what the formula turns on is the metal salts: verdigris, calcined alum, minium and calomel, with toad venom and musk to drive them. This is a topical sore powder taken internally, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. The indication is unmistakable and is the reason the formula exists: a perforated palate and a collapsed nasal bridge, the gummatous destruction of tertiary syphilis. There was no treatment for it, and the title — enliven the soul — measures the desperation rather than the effect. **Contains mercury. This must not be prepared or taken.** Calomel and the other mercury salts in this section are absorbed through the gut and through broken skin, and they accumulate: salivation, loosened teeth, a metallic taste, tremor, kidney injury and the nerve damage the chapter itself calls weakness and paralysis of the limbs. The chapter records this at 2.2 as a complication of its own treatment — mercury poisoning after taking quicksilver or calomel in error, with wind-heaps, swelling, ulceration and running pus. Several of the formulas in this section are offered as the cure for the poisoning the others cause. **It also contains minium (黃丹), a lead oxide; verdigris (銅綠), a copper salt; and toad venom (蟾酥), which is cardiotoxic and has caused fatal arrhythmia. Musk (麝香) and pangolin scale (穿山甲) are from CITES-listed animals and must not be obtained.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
