Translation

Treats the same as above. Calomel 1 don 5 fun; cinnabar, realgar and aged lime, half a don each. Grind to powder, bind with cooked aged rice into pills the size of mung beans, and swallow three pills at a dose in clear tea. — Chipobang 治疱方 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The shortest and bluntest formula in the section: calomel with cinnabar, realgar and aged lime, bound with cooked rice. Nothing moderates it and nothing carries it — four mineral drugs, three pills at a dose, taken in tea. It follows 六六丸 and is given the same indication ("the same as above") from the same unnamed 治疱方. Where the preceding formula at least had frankincense and musk, this one is bare mineral toxicity, and the lime adds a caustic to the metals. **Contains mercury. This must not be prepared or taken.** Calomel and the other mercury salts in this section are absorbed through the gut and through broken skin, and they accumulate: salivation, loosened teeth, a metallic taste, tremor, kidney injury and the nerve damage the chapter itself calls weakness and paralysis of the limbs. The chapter records this at 2.2 as a complication of its own treatment — mercury poisoning after taking quicksilver or calomel in error, with wind-heaps, swelling, ulceration and running pus. Several of the formulas in this section are offered as the cure for the poisoning the others cause. **It also contains cinnabar (朱砂), a mercuric sulfide; realgar (雄黃), an arsenic sulfide; and lime (石灰), which is caustic and burns mucous membrane.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
