Six-Six Pill

Yungnyuk-hwan

한글 육륙환  ·  Pinyin Liu Liu Wan

六六丸

The transcription prints a space inside 雄黃 各五分 at 027b; it is not a gap in the text. The source label 治疱方 is not one of the standard abbreviations used elsewhere in the corpus and is romanised here as Chipobang; it appears twice in this section, for this formula and for 天疱丸. The second 六 is read in its non-initial form, giving Yukryuk-hwan, which follows the corpus's 淸六丸 cheongryuk-hwan and 溫六丸 onryuk-hwan rather than the 六君子湯 group, where the character stands at the head of a fixed compound.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Six pills, one a day for six days, and six drugs to make them — the name counts both. Four of the six are heavy-metal salts: calomel first and heaviest, then minium, cinnabar and realgar, with frankincense and musk to carry them. There is no plant drug in it at all beyond the rice paste that holds it together. Formulas of this shape are the reason the chapter has a section on calomel poisoning. A don and three fun of calomel divided six ways is about nine hundred milligrams of mercurous chloride a day, and courses were repeated. The eruption it treats would have faded on its own within weeks. **Contains mercury. This must not be prepared or taken.** Calomel and the other mercury salts in this section are absorbed through the gut and through broken skin, and they accumulate: salivation, loosened teeth, a metallic taste, tremor, kidney injury and the nerve damage the chapter itself calls weakness and paralysis of the limbs. The chapter records this at 2.2 as a complication of its own treatment — mercury poisoning after taking quicksilver or calomel in error, with wind-heaps, swelling, ulceration and running pus. Several of the formulas in this section are offered as the cure for the poisoning the others cause. **It also contains minium (黃丹), a lead oxide; cinnabar (朱砂), a mercuric sulfide; and realgar (雄黃), an arsenic sulfide. Musk (麝香) is from a CITES-listed animal.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
