Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治勞瘧. 常山ㆍ知母ㆍ草果各一錢半, 良薑一錢, 烏梅肉ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑五棗二, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats the taxation malaria. Dichroa, anemarrhena and tsaoko, 1 don 5 fun each; lesser galangal, 1 don; mume flesh and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut them up and make one packet, add five slices of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's bare statement of its own method: dichroa to eject the paroxysm, and five drugs around it whose entire job is to make the dichroa survivable. Tsaoko, lesser galangal and five slices of ginger warm the stomach against the retching; mume flesh astringes; licorice buffers; anemarrhena answers the heat that dichroa cannot touch. Nothing here supplements. It sits in the taxation-malaria group, which is odd for a 截瘧 formula, and the chapter's own warning at the end of that section is worth reading against it: in enduring malaria from original qi vacuity, Cheongpi and the cutting formulas often finish the patient, and Bojungikgi-tang is what is wanted. Gunggwibyeolgap-san beside it takes the opposite approach to the same pattern. **Contains dichroa (常山), which is a powerful emetic and is hepatotoxic.
