Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs made into honey pills, which is unusual in this chapter — almost everything else here is a decoction taken on the morning of the attack. A pill can be carried and taken daily, and the indication explains why: taxation malaria that has run for years, and the miasmic malaria of wet southern country where a patient is away from a pharmacy. The composition is dichroa and light fermented soybean at equal and dominant weight, with peach kernel to break the stagnant blood of a long illness, pungent cinnamon to warm the channels, and mume flesh to astringe. Fermented soybean at 3 nyang 5 don is doing real work rather than serving as a binder — it is the Jikji's light outward-releasing drug, the same role cicada moulting plays in Jaenggong-san. **Contains dichroa (常山), which is a powerful emetic and is hepatotoxic. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
