Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治久瘧不損元氣. 辰砂ㆍ阿魏(眞者) 各一兩. 右硏勻, 稀米糊和丸皂角子大, 空心以人參湯化下一丸. 《得效》

Translation

Treats the enduring malaria without damaging the original qi. Cinnabar and asafoetida, the genuine article, 1 nyang each. Grind them together evenly and roll pills with a thin rice paste, the size of a gleditsia seed; on an empty stomach dissolve one pill down in ginseng decoction. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs and one pill a day, and the claim in the first line is the point of the entry: it settles an enduring malaria 不損元氣, without damaging the original qi. That is written against everything else in this group. The chapter has just warned that dichroa and the cutting formulas kill patients whose original qi has gone, and this is the Deukhyo's answer — asafoetida to disperse what is bound and kill the malarial agent, cinnabar to settle, a thin rice paste to bind, and ginseng decoction as the vehicle so that even the swallow supplements. The dose is a single pill the size of a gleditsia seed on an empty stomach, which is as gentle as this chapter gets. **Contains cinnabar (辰砂), which is mercuric sulfide and a source of mercury poisoning. This must not be prepared.** The historical reasoning is worth keeping; the prescription is not one to reproduce in any form. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
