Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治勞瘧. 鼈甲二錢, 川芎ㆍ當歸ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ半夏ㆍ陳皮ㆍ靑皮各一錢, 烏梅一箇. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑五棗二, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats the taxation malaria. Turtle shell, 2 don; cnidium, Korean angelica, red poria, red peony, pinellia, aged tangerine peel and green tangerine peel, 1 don each; one mume. Cut them up and make one packet, add five slices of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The first formula the chapter gives for taxation malaria, and the one that reads the disease as a blood problem rather than a paroxysm to be broken. Turtle shell leads at double weight to soften what has hardened below the ribs; cnidium, Korean angelica and red peony move and nourish the blood; the two tangerine peels and pinellia with red poria clear the phlegm that the long illness left behind; mume astringes. The chapter's own description of taxation malaria explains the choice — exterior and interior both vacuous, the true original qi not yet recovered, the illness stopping briefly and returning at the least exertion, going on for years. A formula of this shape is not trying to cut the cycle short. There is no dichroa in it at all, which in this chapter is a deliberate omission rather than an oversight. **Contains pinellia (半夏), which is toxic raw and must be properly processed before use.** Turtle shell is from a protected species and is not a material to source today. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
