Translation

Treats the resting dysentery long continued, with the effect of a spirit. Chinese sumac root, cocklebur root and ailanthus root, the white bark scraped off each, equal parts. Cut up; for each dose take 7 don with three slices of fresh ginger, two jujubes, thirty-six black soybeans and forty-nine grains of glutinous rice, and decoct together on an empty stomach. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three root barks, all astringent and all gathered the same way, for the chronic dysentery that nothing else has touched. The counted beans and grains are numerology — thirty-six and forty-nine are both squares with cosmological weight — and the chapter prints them as part of the prescription. What the formula actually delivers is a strong tannin decoction, which for a chronically ulcerated bowel is not an unreasonable thing. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
