Translation

Treats the resting dysentery on which a hundred medicines have had no effect. Ailanthus root bark, 2 nyang; chebula flesh, 5 don; mother clove, thirty buds. Powder, make pills with vinegar paste the size of a paulownia seed, and swallow fifty in aged rice water with a little vinegar added, three times a day. — Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Chebula is the formula's name but ailanthus bark is four times its weight, so the pill is really the ailanthus given in a convenient form. Vinegar appears twice, in the pill paste and in the vehicle, which is this chapter's standard marker for an astringing intention. A hundred medicines with no effect is the Bonsa's way of saying the case is chronic and nothing tried has worked. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
