Donguibogam

Translation

Treats every kind of withdrawal-epilepsy and wind mania, or such as is brought on by terror. First put 2 nyang 5 don of black lead into a pan and melt it; next add 2 nyang of quicksilver and wait until it granulates into grains; then add cinnabar and powdered frankincense, 1 nyang each, and while it is still hot grind it even with a willow-wood pestle and make pills the size of a water-chestnut. Take one on an empty stomach with well water. When the patient falls asleep, on no account disturb him; when he wakes he will be at ease. A second pill will remove the root. Formerly the son of King Chungui fell ill in his mind, and this medicine was compounded; a mad dog happened by and was fed it, and recovered at once. They cut open the dog's belly and looked, and the medicine was found clasping the dog's gall — and so it was named. — Gyeongheombang 經驗方 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared — it is the most dangerous formula in the chapter.** Molten lead amalgamated with mercury, then cinnabar: three heavy-metal poisons, two of them in the amalgam that the method deliberately creates. The sedation it produced was real, and that is the point — 病者得睡, 切莫驚動, the patient sleeps and is not to be disturbed — but it is the sedation of acute metal poisoning. The naming story, with the pill found clasping the dog's gall, is an etymology invented after the fact. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
