Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治因驚失心, 遂成癲疾, 發則涎潮昏塞, 醒則精神若痴. 紫蘇子一兩, 附子ㆍ木香ㆍ白殭蠶(炒)ㆍ白花蛇ㆍ橘紅ㆍ天麻ㆍ南星各五錢, 全蝎二錢半, 龍腦ㆍ麝香各五分, 朱砂(水飛) 二錢半<span class='sochu'>半爲衣</span>. 右爲末, 蜜丸龍眼大, 朱砂爲衣, 每一丸薄荷湯或溫酒化下. 《局方》 ○去附子加鐵粉尤妙. 《局方》

Translation

Treats one who has lost his mind from a fright so that it has become withdrawal disease: when it breaks out there is a tide of drool and clouded blockage, and when he wakes his spirit is as though witless. Perilla seed, 1 nyang; aconite, costus, silkworm (stir-fried), agkistrodon, red tangerine peel, gastrodia and arisaema, 5 don each; scorpion, 2 don 5 fun; borneol and musk, 5 fun each; cinnabar (water-ground), 2 don 5 fun <span class='sochu'>half of it for the coating</span>. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a longan, coat with cinnabar, and dissolve one at a time in mint decoction or warm wine. Leaving out the aconite and adding iron powder is better still. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar, aconite, musk and agkistrodon. 因驚失心, 遂成癲疾 — losing one's mind from a fright, and that becoming withdrawal disease — is the chapter's clearest statement of a psychosis with a precipitating event, and 醒則精神若痴, the spirit witless between fits, is the interictal state.
