Warm the Fright Pill

Ongyeong-hwan

한글 온경환 (소아)  ·  Pinyin Wen Jing Wan

溫驚丸

The derived id collides with a formula of a different name: 溫經丸, the Jeongui aconite pill of the Sores chapter for a long-standing fistula, is registered as `ongyeong-hwan`, and 溫驚丸 romanizes onto it. Following 平肌散/平氣散 and 千金散/淸音散, the later leaf takes the chapter tail, so this is `ongyeong-hwan-soa`. 牛膽南星 is entered as arisaema with the ox-bile processing in the prep, as the corpus does elsewhere; the ox bile used again to bind the pills is entered separately. 胭脂胚 is the cake of rouge itself and is entered under 臙脂.

Translation

Treats the depletion pattern of acute fright. Ox-bile processed arisaema, 4 nyang; bamboo silica, 1 nyang; cinnabar, 1 don 5 fun; rouge cake, half a don; borneol, 5 fun. Powder the above and bind with ox bile into pills the size of a euryale seed, dissolved in sugar water. Also called Pink Pill. — Jeoneul 錢乙 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The 虛 member of the triad — depleted, warm it. The warming is nominal: four nyang of arisaema processed in ox bile, which is a cooling preparation of a hot drug, with bamboo silica, cinnabar, borneol and a little rouge. What makes it the depletion formula is the absence of a purgative rather than the presence of anything warm. The rouge is why it is also called the Pink Pill, and that is worth noticing for what it says about paediatric practice: the pill was coloured to be given to a child. **Contains cinnabar — 朱砂, mercuric sulfide — in a formula for a child, and the chapter gives no dose by weight anywhere. This must not be prepared.** The mercury paragraph under Jinsa-go-soa applies here in full. Arisaema is toxic raw; bile processing is a genuine step and does not make four nyang of it safe for an infant. A convulsing child who looks depleted rather than febrile is the harder case and the one the chapter was right to separate. The reason that child is convulsing is usually systemic — dehydration and electrolyte derangement, hypoglycaemia, hypocalcaemia, meningitis — and the thing that would save most of them is fluid and electrolyte replacement, which did not exist. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
