Clinical commentary 臨床

Qian Yi's blue paste, and the one leaf in the batch that doses by age: a grain of rice inside the first month, half a soapberry seed at six months, a whole one at a year. That is real paediatric thinking and it is nearly the only quantitative instinct in the whole section — someone had noticed that a newborn is not a small adult. It is also the limit of what the period could do, because the graded unit is a seed. The composition is the wind-and-fright shelf again, with the indigo giving the paste its name and its colour: typhonium and gastrodia for the wind, snake flesh and scorpion tail as the animal antispasmodics, cinnabar and musk for the fright. 發散 in the indication marks the intention — this one is meant to push outward, as against Igyeong-hwan which drives down. **Contains cinnabar — 朱砂, mercuric sulfide — in a formula for a child, and the chapter gives no dose by weight anywhere. This must not be prepared.** The mercury paragraph under Jinsa-go-soa applies here in full. The scorpion tail is dried venomous animal, typhonium is handled as toxic throughout this corpus, and the musk is CITES Appendix I. Grading the dose by age does not make a graded dose of mercury safe; it makes the unsafety better organized. On what an acute febrile seizure actually requires, see Igyeong-hwan. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
