Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治陰虛火動ㆍ咳嗽咯血. 天門冬ㆍ白朮各八兩, 百部根ㆍ杏仁ㆍ貝母ㆍ百合各四兩, 欵冬花五兩, 紫菀三兩. 右麄剉, 以長流水一斗, 煎取三升; 又易新水煎取三升, 如此三次, 合取汁, 入飴糖八兩ㆍ蜜十六兩, 再熬, 入阿膠四兩ㆍ白茯苓細末四兩, 和勻成膏. 每服三五匙, 不以時. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats cough with the coughing of blood from yin vacuity with fire stirring. Asparagus root and white atractylodes, 8 nyang each; stemona root, apricot kernel, fritillaria and lily, 4 nyang each; coltsfoot, 5 nyang; aster, 3 nyang. Cut them up coarsely and decoct in one du of running water down to three seung; change the water for fresh and decoct again down to three seung, and so three times in all; combine the strained liquids, add 8 nyang of malt sugar and 16 nyang of honey and boil again; stir in 4 nyang of ass-hide glue and 4 nyang of finely powdered white poria, and mix evenly into a paste. Clinical commentary 臨床

A proper pharmaceutical paste: three successive decoctions of the same drugs, the liquids combined, boiled down with a pound and a half of honey and malt sugar, and finished with ass-hide glue and poria powder to body it. The result keeps, and is taken by the spoonful at any hour — 不以時 — which is the right form for a cough that never quite stops. The drug list is the chapter's whole moistening repertory in one place: asparagus root, lily, stemona, coltsfoot, aster, fritillaria. Stemona is the one with a specific action worth noting — it is the tradition's antitussive for a long dry cough and is still used for that, and in veterinary and folk practice as an antiparasitic wash. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
