Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺鬱痰嗽, 睡不安. 貝母一兩, 杏仁五錢, 靑黛三錢. 右爲末, 砂糖入薑汁糊和丸彈子大, 噙化. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats lung depression with phlegm cough and unquiet sleep. Fritillaria, 1 nyang; apricot kernel, 5 don; indigo, 3 don. Grind to a powder, work sugar into a ginger-juice paste and make pills the size of a bullet, to be held in the mouth and dissolved. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs and a sugar base, made as a lozenge rather than a pill to be swallowed: 噙化, held in the mouth and let dissolve, which puts the medicine on the throat where the cough is felt. Fritillaria and apricot kernel are the standard pair for a dry irritable cough, and indigo is the chapter's marker drug for depressed fire in the lung. The form is the point. A sweet lozenge sucked slowly for a cough that will not let a patient sleep is still what a pharmacy sells, and for the same reason — the sugar and the slow dissolving do as much as the drugs. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
