Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治久嗽聲嘶, 語音不出. 訶子皮ㆍ五倍子ㆍ五味子ㆍ片芩ㆍ甘草各等分. 右爲末, 蜜丸櫻桃大, 每一丸夜化嚥下. 《入門》

Translation

Treats long cough with hoarseness and the speaking voice not coming out. Chebula rind, gallnut, schisandra, sliced scutellaria and licorice in equal parts. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a cherry, and let one melt overnight in the mouth and swallow. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Seongeum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three astringents — chebula, gallnut, schisandra — with one cooling medicinal, for the voice worn thin rather than blocked. 3.7.1 says hoarseness is the throat broken, not the gullet diseased, and this is the formula for mending it: hold it closed and let it rest. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
