Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治熱嗽. 能瀉肺胃之火, 火降則痰消嗽止. 陳皮ㆍ杏仁各一錢半, 赤茯苓ㆍ半夏ㆍ桔梗ㆍ貝母ㆍ前胡ㆍ瓜蔞仁ㆍ黃芩ㆍ石膏各一錢, 枳殼八分, 甘草三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入生薑三片, 水煎服, 食後. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats hot cough. It can drain the fire of the lung and stomach, and when the fire comes down the phlegm is dispersed and the cough stops. Tangerine peel and apricot kernel, 1 don 5 fun each; red poria, pinellia, platycodon, fritillaria, hogfennel, trichosanthes seed, scutellaria and gypsum, 1 don each; bitter orange peel, 8 fun; licorice, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water and take after food. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's standard formula for a hot cough, and the named section 3.6 sends the reader to it twice over — once for 熱嗽 and again for the 火鬱 cough with a red face. It is Ijin-tang widened: the two matured ingredients at the head, then gypsum and scutellaria for the fire, fritillaria and trichosanthes for the sticky phlegm, platycodon and hogfennel to lift it out. 食後 — take it after food — is the one instruction worth keeping. Gypsum and scutellaria on an empty stomach are hard on it, and the formula is aimed at stomach fire as much as lung fire. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
