Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷飮食, 胃火上炎, 衝逼肺氣, 痰嗽久不愈, 一服卽差. 石膏二錢, 貝母ㆍ知母各一錢半, 梔子ㆍ黃芩各一錢二分, 桑白皮ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ瓜蔞仁ㆍ陳皮各一錢, 枳實七分, 生甘草二分, 五味子十粒. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三, 煎服. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats injury from food and drink with stomach fire blazing upward and driving against the lung qi, and a phlegm cough long uncured; one dose brings relief. Gypsum, 2 don; fritillaria and anemarrhena, 1 don 5 fun each; gardenia and scutellaria, 1 don 2 fun each; mulberry root bark, red poria, trichosanthes seed and tangerine peel, 1 don each; bitter orange, 7 fun; raw licorice, 2 fun; schisandra, ten grains. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and decoct. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The mechanism named in the indication is the useful part: 胃火上炎, 衝逼肺氣 — stomach fire blazing up and driving against the lung qi — for a chronic cough that follows on eating. That is reflux cough, and it is one of the three commonest causes of a cough lasting more than eight weeks. The formula treats the stomach, with gypsum, gardenia and scutellaria, and only secondarily the lung. 一服卽差, one dose brings relief, is the Uigam's claim and not to be taken literally; but the reasoning that a cough with no lung findings may be coming from below is sound, and is why the chapter keeps 食積嗽 as a category of its own. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
