Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治食痰壅滯喘嗽. 瓜蔞實ㆍ半夏麴ㆍ山査子ㆍ神麴各等分. 右爲末, 瓜蔞瓤水和丸, 竹瀝薑湯下五七十丸. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats food phlegm congested and stagnant, with panting and cough. Trichosanthes fruit, pinellia leaven, hawthorn fruit and medicated leaven, in equal parts. Grind to a powder and make pills with the pulp-water of the trichosanthes; fifty to seventy pills down with bamboo sap and ginger decoction. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs, two of them digestive leavens, for the cough that follows a heavy meal — 食積嗽, the food accumulation cough of 3.6, which the chapter says cannot be cleared without trichosanthes and indigo. The pill is bound with the trichosanthes pulp itself rather than with paste, which keeps the whole formula to its four ingredients. Cough provoked by eating is reflux, and treating it by moving the stomach contents along rather than by quieting the lung is the right direction. **Pinellia leaven is a processed form of pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
