Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治虛勞咳嗽ㆍ吐唾血ㆍ發熱消瘦. 山藥ㆍ五味子ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ阿膠珠ㆍ白茯苓各一兩, 丹參ㆍ貝母ㆍ防風ㆍ茯神ㆍ栢子仁ㆍ百部根ㆍ杜冲各五錢, 遠志ㆍ人參各二錢半. 右爲末, 蜜和作丸彈子大, 每一丸, 以小水略煎, 和滓呷服. 《局方》

Translation

Treats cough of vacuity taxation with the vomiting and spitting of blood, with fever and wasting. Chinese yam, schisandra, prepared rehmannia, ass-hide glue beads and white poria, 1 nyang each; salvia, fritillaria, siler, poria with wood, arborvitae seed, stemona root and eucommia, 5 don each; polygala and ginseng, 2 don 5 fun each. Grind to a powder, mix with honey and make pills the size of a bullet; one pill each time, decocted briefly in a little water and sipped with the dregs. — Hwaje Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Fifteen drugs and the largest of the chapter's taxation-cough formulas. The base is a kidney-and-lung set — yam, prepared rehmannia, schisandra, eucommia — with ass-hide glue for the bleeding and arborvitae seed, polygala and poria with wood for the sleeplessness that goes with it. 發熱消瘦, fever with wasting, places it at the stage where the chapter expects the patient to be losing ground. The preparation instruction is worth noticing: one bullet-sized pill briefly boiled in a little water and sipped with the dregs, so that a pill becomes a drink.
