Night-Dew Decoction

한글 노숙탕  ·  Pinyin Lu Su Tang

Translation

Treats wind dysentery passing pure clear blood. Apricot kernel with skin and tip removed, seven kernels; bitter-bark sore-wood, a piece a palm wide — that is, ailanthus root bark; one mume plum; one tsaoko; half a pomegranate rind; two pieces of unripe tangerine peel; licorice, one inch. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, decoct, leave it out overnight under the stars, and take it on an empty stomach the next morning. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Every quantity in this formula is given by eye — seven kernels, a palm's width of bark, half a rind, an inch of licorice — which marks it as a household recipe the Deukhyo collected rather than a physician's prescription. The materials are the astringent ones, pomegranate rind and ailanthus bark above all, and both are heavy in tannins. Leaving the decoction out overnight under the stars is the chapter's recurring instruction for a medicine meant to be cooling, and it appears whenever the complaint is bleeding rather than cold. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
