Translation

Treats the large intestine vacuous and cold with a dysentery passing blue-green and white. Coptis, 4 don; red poria and chuanxiong, 3 don each; pomegranate rind, five pieces; sanguisorba, 5 don; hearth earth, 2 don. Cut up and take 8 don as one packet, decocted in water on an empty stomach. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication says vacuous and cold and the chief drug is the coldest in the pharmacy, which is the sort of contradiction this chapter is full of and which repays reading closely: the cold is the patient's constitution, the heat is in the bowel, and the formula clears the second while the earth and pomegranate hold the first. Hearth earth — the baked clay from under a cooking fire — is used throughout the tradition for a bleeding or leaking bowel, and as a warm adsorbent it is a reasonable counterweight to the coptis. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
