Campsis Flower Powder for Leprous Wind

Neungsohwa-san

한글 능소화산 (제창)  ·  Pinyin Ling Xiao Hua San

凌霄花散

The Donguibogam has two formulas named 凌霄花散. The other, from the Seui Deukhyobang, is the two-drug 凌霄花ㆍ山梔子 powder for 酒齄鼻 registered as neungsohwa-san; this five-drug Dansim leaf for 癩風 is a different prescription and takes the chapter tail. The transcription writes 蚕 for 蠶; the corpus form is printed. The two 炒 fall after 地龍 and after 全蝎 and are read as preparations of those two drugs. The four creature drugs are counted by the piece and carry no gram figure. 凌霄花 is registered under 紫葳.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs, and four of them counted out seven at a time: cicada moulting, earthworm, silkworm and scorpion, with campsis flower at five don giving the formula its name. The 大風瘡 section lists it first among the 通用 formulas, the ones for general use once the staged courses and the two route-formulas have been set out. Creature drugs are the chapter's idiom for wind that has gone deep and for lesions that will not move — the same reasoning that puts three snakes at the head of Hwangi-san. Campsis flower is a blood-breaker, which is also what it is doing in the rosacea formula of the same name in the Nose chapter. **Contains whole scorpion, which is toxic.** Seven scorpions to a batch dosed at two don is a small exposure, but the formula has no activity against Mycobacterium leprae and 神效 should be read as the chapter's formula, not as a result. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
