Translation

Treats vacuity dysentery with the qi weak and the patient exhausted. White atractylodes, bitter orange, white peony and areca, 1 don each; atractylodes and tangerine peel, 8 fun each; magnolia bark, 7 fun; costus root, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. This is the medicine for regulating and ordering a dysentery. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Uigam's closing note is the point: this is the regulating formula, for after the dysentery rather than during it. Nothing in it clears heat or binds the stool; it is all spleen support and qi movement, for a patient left weak and bloated once the illness has passed. Every dysentery section in this chapter needs a formula like this and only here is one named for the purpose. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
